Global Summit of Women 1999
Women’s Economic Summit of the Americas

Buenos Aires, Argentina

About Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires, Argentina is the site of the Women's Economic Summit of the Americas.  The third largest economy of Latin America, Argentina with its large and stable middle class has the highest per capita income in the region.  Its capital, Buenos Aires, has long been a cultural and economic center known for its wide avenues and beautiful architecture.

Argentina has a wealth of women leaders in business and politics.  With an active and multilayered women's community that has pushed for change, Argentina is one of the few countries that allocates a third of parliamentary seats to women candidates.  In the business world, women entrepreneurs are making headway and a few women have made senior executive ranks in some companies.  As with women in other countries, some progress has been made but major challenges remain.
