Award Winner Ela Bhatt


 
Fondly known as Ela Behn, Dr. Bhatt founded ‘SEWA’, Self Employed Women’s Association) South Asia’s first labor and trade union for Women.  In founding SEWA (or service in Hindi), she dedicated herself to the betterment of the oppressed and impoverished people of India- particularly its women.  Her vision has inspired thousands of women to join together to transform their lives and their world.  A lawyer by training, Dr. Bhatt was primarily inspired by of Mahatma Gandhi.  SEWA operates as a union for 250,000 self-employed women that also functions as a bank for women, which is dedicated to their empowerment.
