of Women 2005
Award Winner Mary Robinson Widely known as the former President of Ireland, Ms. Robinson was the first woman head of state to become president. She has dedicated the majority of her life as a human rights advocate who used law as an instrument for social change. From 1997 to 2002, Ms. Robinson was the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and has been the Honorary President of Oxfam International. Additionally, she is a member of the American Philosophical Society, the Royal Irish Academy, and is a founding member and Chair of the Council of Women World Leaders. She served on the International Commission of Jurists, the Advisory Committee of Interights, and is on many boards including the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the Vaccine Fund.
